Below is a listing of manuals for using the Positive Deviance Approach, developed by various organizations throughout the world. The manuals focus on different sectors of PD application as well as specific country or region adaptations. For this reason, not all of these manuals are available in English.

Title: Poverty Alleviation and Nutrition Program (PANP) Manuals

Summary: The following manuals were developed as part program in Vietnam led by Jerry and Monique Sternin. Within the PANP program were four integrated programs with a focus on sustainability. Manuals for each of these programs are included below:

Summary: This manual was developed by the Ministry of Health, Community Nutrition Department in collaboration with Save the Children and PDRC (Positive Deviance Resource Center) University of Indonesia. It is for Training of Trainers in the context of using Positive Deviance to address under 5 malnutrition and has been reviewed and accreditied by the Indonesian Professional Training Board.

Title: Peace Corps Mali Hearth Nutrition Guide 2008

Summary: This is a guide for a community-based approach to nutritional rehabilitation and behavior change as used by the Peace Corps in Mali.The PD/Hearth program has been conducted in a variety of countries and cultures around the world.  The program came to Mali in 2005 and has since been implemented by dozens of volunteers in a variety of sectors.  This manual will provide you with a framework and guidelines for setting up and implementing a Hearth project while keeping in mind that there is no one, right way to do a Hearth.

Summary: This manual was published by Save the Children USA in 1998 and is a step-by-step look at what the Positive Deviance Approach involves in the field setting. It is specific to addressing childhood malnutrition and the use of the Hearth Model, with examples from experiences in Vietnam, Nepal and Mozambique. The appendices cover regional profiles compiled by Marian Zeitlin in 1996 as well as sample questions for interviews and training curriculum.

Title: Positive Deviance Hearth – A Resource Guide for Sustainably Rehabilitating Malnourished Children

Summary:
This manual was published in February 2003 by the Child Survival Collaborations and Resources Group (the CORE Group). The manual begins with an overview of Positive Deviance and the Hearth Approach. It explains in detail how to identify at-risk children, conduct a Positive Deviance Inquiry to identify positive practices, conduct Hearth sessions, and set up a monitoring and evaluation system. Throughout the manual are exercises, tips and lessons learned by non-governmental organizations that are successfully implementing PD/Hearth around the world.

Title: Approche des Foyers d'Apprentissage et de Rehabilitation Nutritionnelle Utilisant la Positive Deviance

Summary:

This manual (English title: The Hearth Approach and Nutritional Rehabilitation using Positive Deviance) was developed by the Senegalese Ministry of Health National Service for Food and Nutrition with technical assistance from BASICS II and World Vision, and it discusses applications of PD nutrition and the Hearth Model in Senegal. The manual begins with a description of the context and setting, continues with an overview of PD and the Hearth Model, and then systematically goes through the steps for introducing and setting up a project using these development approaches. Specific examples come from the experience of BASICS II and World Vision in the Koungheul District. (This manual is in French.)

Summary: This manual, written in Friench,  was developed in Mali for nutrition interventions in French West Africa.

Summary: This workshop included participants from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Philippines, Indonesia, Nepal, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and UNICEF India Nutrition Unit. The five day workshop aimed at training the trainers and had the objectives of introducing participants to the Positive Deviance/Hearth Approach, equipping participants with community mobilization skills, as well as the skills to monitor, evaluate and expand PD/Hearth interventions to address malnutrition among children.

Sector: Public Health (Maternal and Newborn Care)
Title: Pregnant Women Support Group Program – Training of Trainers
Organization(s) Involved: Keller International and Africare
Date: 2006
Summary: This manual was used by Helen Keller International and Africare to support positive prenatal care seeking and infant feeding practices in Guinea and Sierra Leone. Positive deviants were identified in the community, given further health training, and then acted as group leaders in classes for other pregnant women in the nearly 100 communities.
