PD/Hearth project in Orissa, India
Sector: Nutrition
Date Range: 2005-current
Location(s): Orissa, India
Organization: Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS)
In Orissa, the Positive Deviance approach is being implemented through a headline campaign "Ame Bi Paribu," or "We Too Can," in the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) - a flagship programme of the Government of Orissa, supported by UNICEF. Today, 6200 Child Healthcare Centers (or Anganwadi Centers "AWC")across the state have implemented the PD approach to tackle infant and child malnutrition. The widespread program has seen much success. According to a doctor at the Kaptipada sub-divisional hospital in Udala, referral cases of malnutrition in 0 to 3 year-old children have decreased from 7-8 per month in 2001 to just 1-2 in 2008.

Project Spotlight
PD Hearth Project in Indonesia
Sector: Nutrition
Location(s): Indonesia
Organization: USAID
From 2003 – 2008, USAID funded five international NGOs, (CARE, Catholic Relief Services (CRS), Mercy Corps (MC), Save the Children US (SC), and World Vision International (WVI)), to implement Positive Deviance in Indonesia as part of food security programs. Together, the five NGOs reached 9,997 children across the country. Of this number, 59.6% gained 200g between admission into the program (Day 1) and graduation from the program (Day 10). Of 4,847 participants who were weighed again at the end of the month, 45% had gained the recommended 400g. Results differed slightly (but not significantly) between implementers; however, they differed dramatically between different communities.
