MRSA Reduction in Canadian Hospitals

Sector: Healthcare

Location(s): Toronto ON

Organization: Plexus Institute

The Toronto University Health Network has begun using PD in an effort to reduce their rates of MRSA infections.

The Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI) awarded a grant to support PD/MRSA prevention initiatives over an 18 month period in six pilot hospitals: Vancouver General Hospital, BC, Kelowna General Hospital, BC, Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre, MB, Toronto East General Hospital, ON, Trillium Health Centre, ON, and Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital, ON.

The pilot sites are currently in the early stages of implementing PD in their facilities, and are starting to gather data for baseline measurements. The six pilot hospitals will be provided with local training, close mentoring and PD coaching over the 18 month period.

CPSI's main goal in awarding the grants is to fund projects which focus on patient safety and which have the potential to be used in a variety of organizations throughout Canada. Through the PD process, the pilot hospitals will empower staff to apply their knowledge and experiences to address infection control issues within their own facilities to bring about sustainable culture change and decreases in MRSA and CD. This project also aims to help develop local expertise in PD in order to enable future PD projects in the Canadian healthcare system.

Michael Gardam is serving as the Principal Investigator (Toronto, Ontario) and will be heading the project entitled: Reducing the Transmission of Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium difficile in the Canadian Healthcare System by Enabling Front Line Healthcare Worker Behavioural Change Using Positive Deviance.

PD Hearth Project in Indonesia

Sector: Nutrition

Location(s): Indonesia

Organization: USAID

From 2003 – 2008, USAID funded five international NGOs, (CARE, Catholic Relief Services (CRS), Mercy Corps (MC), Save the Children US (SC), and World Vision International (WVI)), to implement Positive Deviance in Indonesia as part of food security programs. Together, the five NGOs reached 9,997 children across the country. Of this number, 59.6% gained 200g between admission into the program (Day 1) and graduation from the program (Day 10). Of 4,847 participants who were weighed again at the end of the month, 45% had gained the recommended 400g. Results differed slightly (but not significantly) between implementers; however, they differed dramatically between different communities.
