Five Years of Implementing Nutrition Programs Using the Positive Deviance Approach:
Lessons Learned and the Way Forward
The workshop was held over three days in Depok, East Java. There were 118 Participants including professors from the School of Public Health, University of Indonesia (FKM UI), four sections of the Ministry of Health, six Provincial Health Offices (PHO) and 16 District Health Offices (DHO), Puskesmas, Kaders, village health committees, 10 international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and two local non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
On first day participants covered four main themes: implementation, training, stakeholders and evaluation. On day two, six groups (Kaders, Community leaders, Puskesmas, Dinkes, MOH and INGOs, discussed their views about PD implementation, with each group making a presentation to the plenary on key issues and concerns. On the final day, the Garut District, West Java village health committee, village midwife (bidan desa) and the DHO for community mobilization spoke about the integration of the Positive Deviance Nutrition Education and Rehabilitation Programs (PD NERP) with the Ministry of Health's P4K (Program Persiapan Persalinan dan Pencegahan Komplikasi) birth preparedness/complication readiness program. In concluding the workshop, small group discussions were held to plan for the way forward with recommendations and suggested follow-up presented to the large group.
The newly established Positive Deviance Resource Centre (PDRC) at the University of Indonesia will play a major role in follow-up and communication between the different workshop attendees and others implementing PD programs.
