Below is a listing of manuals for using the Positive Deviance Approach developed by various organizations throughout the world. The manuals focus on different sectors of PD application as well as specific country or region adaptations. For this reason, not all of these manuals are available in English.
This manual was published by Save the Children USA in 1998 and is a step-by-step look at what the Positive Deviance Approach involves in the field setting. It is specific to addressing childhood malnutrition and the use of the Hearth Model, with examples from experiences in Vietnam, Nepal and Mozambique. The appendices cover regional profiles compiled by Marian Zeitlin in 1996 as well as sample questions for interviews and training curriculum.
This manual (English title: The Hearth Approach and Nutritional Rehabilitation using Positive Deviance) was developed by the Senegalese Ministry of Health National Service for Food and Nutrition with technical assistance from BASICS II and World Vision, and it discusses applications of PD nutrition and the Hearth Model in Senegal. The manual begins with a description of the context and setting, continues with an overview of PD and the Hearth Model, and then systematically goes through the steps for introducing and setting up a project using these development approaches. Specific examples come from the experience of BASICS II and World Vision in the Koungheul District. (This manual is in French.)
This manual was published in February 2003 by the Child Survival Collaborations and Resources Group (the CORE Group). The manual begins with an overview of Positive Deviance and the Hearth Approach. It explains in detail how to identify at-risk children, conduct a Positive Deviance Inquiry to identify positive practices, conduct Hearth sessions, and set up a monitoring and evaluation system. Throughout the manual are exercises, tips and lessons learned by non-governmental organizations that are successfully implementing PD/Hearth around the world.
