
The Positive Deviance field guide is a great resource for anyone interested in getting an idea of how this approach is used in the field. It is specific to addressing childhood malnutrition and the Hearth Nutrition model, and provides steps from assessing the feasibility of the project through conducting the positive deivance inquiry through developing components to the program based on the findings. The appendices include useful case studies as well as sample forms and checklists.
In November 2000, a workshop was held in Bamako, Mali hosted by Save the Children-Mali with support from BASICS and in collaboration with CARE, Save the Children-Canada, and AFRICARE. Thirty-five participants representing various organizations and countries met for four days to share experiences working with the Positive Deviance approach, discuss lessons learned, and develop recommendations specific to the programs in Mali and in West Africa.
While any positive deviance intervention should be designed to meet the particular needs of the community, these materials should help to provide a background on the types of possible interventions or tools that can be used to design a program using the positive deviance approach.
